Salary band: £50,000 - £90,000
Ploughshare Innovations Ltd converts ‘swords into ploughshares’, converting research commissioned by the military into civilian applications. We work at the commercial edge of technologies developed by the Ministry of Defence, predicting and responding to the fast-moving markets in which our clients operate, building collaborative partnerships. The capabilities of over 3,000 scientists and a budget exceeding £600 million per year generate exciting ideas with multiple potential uses beyond the MoD. Spin-outs and licences established by Ploughshare since it was funded in 2005 range from new medical and diagnostic products to world leading communications and surveillance technologies to revolutionary new materials.
To help us build on the existing success of the company, we require a Vice President and a Manager for Commercialisation activity. You will bring a proven track-record of working with researchers to bring their innovation to commercial markets, through spin-outs, licensing and other agreements. If appointed you will identify and research potential new markets for exciting new technology, negotiate and oversee licensing agreements, set up and develop spin-outs and play a key role in driving the commercialisation agenda in Dstl (the MoD’s research agency). To succeed you will need to work effectively with cross-disciplinary teams and forge strong relationships with commercial partners. For one of these roles, we are looking for a background in life sciences. For the other a degree in a STEM subject is required and an awareness of computer science, big data, or algorithms is desirable. In both posts an MBA is highly desirable.
In these posts, you will enable world-class research groups to exploit their innovations as widely as possible and so benefit the UK economy. Above all, you will have both a genuine passion for working with many of Britain’s best technologists and futurists with the knowledge and skills to help turn their discoveries into attractive commercial propositions.
The post will be based at Ploughshare Innovations Ltd’s main office near Porton Down, Wiltshire. The post holder will need to travel frequently both nationally and internationally.
