We work with a wide variety of investors to fund the growth of our portfolio of spin-out companies and are keen to develop our investor network further to be able to match our future investment opportunities to the right investors.
Due to the nature and origin of the technologies undergoing commercialisation by our spin-out companies, we would expect any investor to be acceptable to the Ministry of Defence and to be able to adhere to our high standards of corporate governance. Institutional funds will need to show they are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and private individuals that they are high net worth individuals or sophisticated investors.
High Net Worth Individuals and Business Angels
We would expect his type of investor to not only take a significant financial stake in the company but to also have specific sector knowledge to be able to contribute strategically to its development.
We would expect institutional funds to be able to deploy ‘patient’ capital but to also play an active part in shaping the business and leading (or helping to syndicate) funding requirements throughout its development lifecycle.
Risks and rewards
Ploughshare will work to create robust business plans that we will then present to our investor network. We cannot, however, make specific investment recommendations.
Investment in new businesses, especially early-stage technology start-ups, carries high risks as well as the possibility of high rewards. It is highly speculative and potential investors should be aware that no established market exists for the trading of shares in private companies. The success of some spin-outs in our portfolio does not in any way predict success for others.
Before investing in a project, potential investors are strongly advised to take advice from a person authorised under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 who specialises in advising on investments of this kind.
